The American Centrifuge: How Ready Is It?

      The Ux Consulting Company, LLC (UxC) is happy to announce the availability of a new UxC Special Report, "The American Centrifuge: How Ready Is It?" The American Centrifuge was heralded by USEC as the technology of the future when it decided to pursue centrifuge technology to replace its aging gaseous diffusion plants. However, there remains considerable uncertainty about the fate of this program, which only increased when USEC recently announced at least a one year delay in the program and the likelihood that the program costs will be significantly higher than the $1.7 billion previously estimated.

      The UxC ACP Report examines the American Centrifuge project based on analyses of 1985-era presentations that contain significant details on the DOE advanced gas centrifuge program at that time. Based on the underlying studies, this report constructs a current cost/SWU range for the ACP project. The UxC ACP Report also discusses reliability issues related to centrifuges, including whether there will be sufficient reliability data on the ACP centrifuge in a relevant timeframe in order to gauge what the lifetimes will be for installed and operating machines. Mr. Steve Turner, the author of the ACP Report, has substantial technical experience in matters relating to the DOE advanced gas centrifuge program. He was the leader of three DOE centrifuge assessment teams including those involved with rotor dynamics and balancing, bearing design, and balance of plant systems.

      The ACP Report package includes the current study done by Mr. Turner, various prior UxC essays on the American Centrifuge program, and a half-day meeting with Mr. Turner (planned for Monday, January 22, 2007 in Washington, DC) to discuss questions you may have on the study. Other dates/locations may be scheduled based on demand.
